We have three products that are flat forms of stainless steel but differ in thickness and how they’re typically sold. Here’s a breakdown:
Stainless Steel Sheet: Imagine a giant sheet of metal, thin and flexible like a large baking tray. Sheet thickness ranges from a fraction of a millimetre to around 5 millimetres. Sold in flat sheets or cut-to-size pieces, stainless steel sheets are ideal for applications needing lighter weight or easy bending. You’ll find them in appliances, panelling, and decorative trims.
Stainless Steel Coil: This is the extended, continuous version of sheet steel, like a giant metal ribbon tightly wound into a coil. Thicknesses are similar to sheets, but widths can reach over a meter. Coils are unwound, cut to length, and fed into machines for shaping complex parts. They’re perfect for high-volume production of identical pieces, like automotive parts, pipes, and even cutlery.
Stainless Steel Plate: This is the heavyweight champion. Plates are much thicker than sheets, typically starting from 6 millimetres and going up to around 150 millimetres. Imagine a solid metal slab. Plates are sold in individual pieces and are best suited for situations requiring high strength and rigidity. They’re used in construction projects, pressure vessels, and heavy machinery.
In essence, sheets are for flexibility and lighter applications, coils are ideal for efficient mass production, and plates offer superior strength for demanding projects.
